Transitional Sleep Therapy
13.STUDENT MEMBERSHIP PLAN
You may be familiar with transitional sleep as a system of self-development, or perhaps the achievements outlined in this volume may be new and strange to you. Five years ago when transitional-sleep tapes first became available, the public was understandably dubious. At that time, few had heard of transitional sleep and, as only 5 per cent of the population has a working knowledge of hypnosis and its wonders, skepticism was inevitable. However, nothing melts skepticism like sound results, and during the first year, 1957, interest in transitional-sleep education and the available prerecorded subjects was stimulated.
Users of prerecorded sleep tapes soon found new and interesting applications for the principles of deep relaxation, and demands multiplied for sleep tapes on new and different subjects. Investigation disclosed that thousands of thoughtful people were intensely interested in this new media and anxious to participate not only with the proved tapes, but in the new developments as well. Africa, Europe, Australia, in fact, every place where English is spoken, have their quota of transitional-sleep devotees.
Early in 1959, a student membership plan was organized. In this way, close contact could be maintained with users of sleep tapes, so that accurate evaluation of beneficial results by students could be periodically determined. Each student receives a periodic questionnaire that he returns to headquarters as a progress report. Since the student organization is noncommercial (there are no membership dues or fees), a report, honest and unbiased, is requested from each student, and cooperation has been excellent from the beginning. The membership system is not only fascinating but is developing into a world-wide research program. In just two years, membership has grown and chapters are being formed by students with common goals and interests. Membership is optional and transitional-sleep tapes are available to all, but everyone sincerely interested in transitional-sleep methods is invited to participate in the membership plan. In this way everyone is periodically apprised of the latest developments and each can profit from the experience of others.
Many are building sleep-tape libraries by adding new tapes from time to time. A tape library can become a treasured possession, since the benefits from all transitional-sleep recordings are cumulative, and tapes may be played periodically for months or even years with beneficial results.
Text material for the different recorded courses was developed in the following manner: When the results of research, both clinical and in the field, are complete, recordings are made employing the distillation of techniques and suggestions that proved most effective through the research periods. Tests are again run using the new recordings, and from these findings standard prerecorded tapes are developed for general use.
What assurance do you have that transitional sleep will work for you? Five years of research and development conclusively prove that the suggestions scientifically induce progressive relaxation and are effective for practically everyone of sound mind and average intelligence. Once conditioned, any transitional-sleep tape, regardless of the subject, brings results that are positive and unmistakable.
CONDITIONING
The recorded conditioning process is a tried-and-proved procedure. It is a two-phase progressive course, recorded on both sides of the tape, with each side approximately thirty minutes at 3¾ ips. It is called "conditioning," since repetitive listening soon trains the conscious mind to slow down, reducing mental strain and eliminating fleeting thoughts on cue. Suggestions inducing deep relaxation of the body are also incorporated, which allow simultaneous relaxation of mind and body. Within a comparatively short time, the full conditioning process becomes unnecessary and profound relaxation can be achieved within ten minutes or less when selected key phrases from the conditioning process are used.
THE STRUCTURE OF TRANSITIONAL SLEEP TAPES
The materials on the various tapes are divided into four parts and recorded in the following order:
Part 1 (introduction): About two minutes of informative data concerning the particular tape or course and its goal.
Part 2 (relaxation): Ten minutes of "key conditioning" phrases to induce subconscious awareness via the transitional-sleep state.
Part 3 (the text, or body, of the message): Approximately fifteen minutes, with two minutes of conditioning inserted at the halfway point, to maintain depth.
Part 4 (the ending—awakening): Two minutes. The listener is aroused at the termination of the tape with appropriate waking suggestions of feeling alert and refreshed.
The standard tape that induces transitional sleep, delivers its respective message, and awakens the listener on cue at the end has been profoundly effective since its release in 1957. This type recording is preferred for daytime use, since the ending assures the listener that he will awaken at the expiration of the thirty-minute tape feeling alert, calm, and refreshed.
Transitional-sleep tapes are precision instruments for two reasons. A profound level of awareness is induced prior to hearing the recorded text, and that level is maintained during the course of the message. To achieve these ends, conditioning material prefaces all texts. The conditioning portion is identical on each tape, since these are the key phrases that the mind has been trained, through repetition, to accept. Due to the incomparable effectiveness in erasing tension and inducing speedy-relaxation, many people choose to play their tapes upon retiring. So in 1960 a new ending was developed. Now, when the listener plays his tapes at bedtime, at the end of the tape the message converts the transitional-sleep state into normal nighttime sleep, without awakening the listener.
DUAL-PURPOSE TAPES
Soon tape purchasers were demanding recordings with the new endings, for use at bedtime. To eliminate the expense of two separate tapes (one with a "wake-up" ending and the other for bedtime use), both were ultimately recorded on a single reel. Since the dual-purpose type of transitional-sleep tape meets both daytime and bedtime requirements, all tapes (except insomnia control) are now recorded on both sides. The material on both sides of the tape is identical, with the exception of the endings.
Side No. 1 can be played during the day whenever time permits. It is particularly desirable during the afternoon or evening, since there is nothing quite as relaxing after a tiresome day. Many users report marked improvement in digestion from listening to their tapes before the evening meal.
Side No. 2 should, of course, be reserved for bedtime use, or whenever one wishes to remain asleep, since the ending does not restore alertness, being designed to induce drowsiness and normal nighttime sleep. (Note: A time switch, or clock, is needed to turn off the recorder when playing Side No. 2 of the dual-purpose tapes. In this way you relax, listen to your tape, and drift into nighttime sleep, without being disturbed by having to turn off the recorder.)
The conditioning recording is also recorded on both sides of the tape. However, both phases of conditioning have "wake-up" endings, for the ability to arouse from transitional sleep on cue is the primary goal of the course, and a nighttime ending for the conditioning would obviously defeat its purpose.
SELECTING TAPES FOR THE GREATEST BENEFITS
Conditioning is the first step, and at least two weeks should be spent with this two-phase course to assure results with future recordings.
The power tapes strengthen the human faculties by erasing blocks and destructive concepts. The power tapes progressively develop the latent potential of the dynamic seven keys and prepare the way for self-attainment and realization. Each tape is a building block, and the achievements of one make results with the next more effective and complete. Just as the first grade in school prepares one for the second, so it is with the keys to power.
While it is true that any of the tapes used at random will produce unmistakable gains, tests have repeatedly proved that the most outstanding results occur when the key-power tapes are used in sequence. The time one devotes to each of the seven key tapes before going to the next naturally varies with the individual and his needs, but the average is about four weeks. At this rate, one might expect to spend about six months on the entire group for best results.
There is nothing of a conflicting nature on any transitional-sleep tape, and we want to emphasize that, although one is currently using the power tapes, he may alternate with other tapes if he so desires. For example, should you have a health problem, you may wish to listen to health tapes periodically, alternating between health and power tapes, and realize benefits in both areas simultaneously. The tension-control tape has no equal and may be used to excellent advantage at any time.
EQUIPMENT NEEDED FOR USING TRANSITIONAL SLEEP TAPES
In the past, when sleep learning was largely experimental and the results dubious, students blazing the trail often found themselves involved with expensive equipment and repeater devices for playing messages periodically throughout the night. Not only were repeater tapes complicated and inefficient in operation, they were also highly disturbing to one's rest and sleep. Usually these repeater messages ran for only three to five minutes, their operation having been designed on the premise of repetition only, trusting to chance that a phrase here and there would penetrate the subconscious of the disturbed sleeper. It is small wonder that worth-while results were sporadic, and most students soon terminated their efforts in disgust. This was before the advent of transitional-sleep conditioning.
Today, transitional-sleep tapes control the depth of relaxation, and far more gains are reported now from listening to a thirty-minute tape during the evening or at bedtime than from days or even weeks with the old experimental methods. Transitional-sleep tapes, instead of interrupting one's sleep, release tension and induce relaxation. Very little equipment is needed beyond a tape recorder, since all transitional-sleep tapes are recorded on standard 7-inch reels at 3¾ i.p.s. A time cock to turn off the recorder when using Side No. 2 at bedtime and a pillow speaker to prevent possible disturbance to others completes the equipment necessary. Our sleep-learning methods not only produce positive results, but are low in cost and convenient as well.
HOW TO LISTEN TO SLEEP TAPES
Select a time when you are least likely to be disturbed, lie down, preferably on your back, and make yourself as comfortable as possible. Side No. 1 of all transitional-sleep tapes may be played any time, or as often as time permits during the day or evening, with positive assurance that you will awaken refreshed and relaxed. We repeat that, inasmuch as all suggestions on the tapes have but one aim, to improve the mind and the body, random playing of the tapes can never produce negative effects. While it is true that the power tapes, for example, show positive gains faster when their natural sequence is followed, indiscriminate playing of these and other recordings still bring results that are desirable and cumulative. After listening to sleep tapes for a while, you will acquire a certain objective ability to "listen" without actually "thinking." It is much like being aware of a conversation without bothering to analyze or speculate as to its nature. In other words, you will be giving your full attention to the recorded message while your mind is quiet, and still and you will be hearing the words without being either critical or speculative.
Occasionally, while listening to a tape with a "wake-up" ending, you may fail to awaken on cue, at the end of the tape. There is only one reason for this. Any time you remain asleep after hearing the waking suggestions at the end indicates that your thoughts strayed while listening to the tape. All tapes guide the attention from the wide-awake state down to and below the threshold of consciousness. As long as your attention remains focused on the voice as you relax and drift below consciousness, rapport is faithfully maintained, assuring your awakening on cue at the finish.
The well-conditioned subject may recall little of the recorded material after waking up, but if he arouses on cue at the end he may be certain that the suggestions are registered on his subconscious and will be effective. Only a few subjects experience complete amnesia for the entire message. It is not necessary to do so.
Most people shift back and forth between consciousness and unconsciousness, maintaining a relaxed, drowsy state for a good part of the message. The ideal attitude for listening to tapes is one of quiet detachment. It is simple—just listen and relax.
PROGRESS REPORTS AND REMARKS
The benefits from tapes have increased as techniques improved. All recorded programs have undergone periodic evaluation tests to determine what each student may expect in positive gains from each tape. Tape users generally become student members, and through quarterly progress reports the efficiency •of transitional-sleep tapes has been streamlined as never before.
Students are pleased with the versatility of transitional-sleep programs. We included here a few excerpts from the quarterly progress reports. They are in no way unusual or out of the ordinary. In fact, they are quite average and reflect what 92 per cent of the transitional-sleep tape users are currently reporting. All letters and reports are on file at headquarters.
